Ela

Ela was rescued as a 7 month old pup from a farm in Northern Spain where she and her 2 brothers were suffering due to the farmer not feeding or caring for them. Thankfully she went to Disabled Dogs Paradise for 4 weeks and was adopted by a lovely couple in France.  Ela has done exceptionally well settling into her new life, and is a testament to the wonderful nature of her breed.  April 2026 update from Ela’s parents:

Ela walked into our lives four months ago, and our home has been full of joy ever since.

It did take her a little while to get used to us, and I’m not sure what her history was before she came here, but at first she seemed frightened of walking through hallways and dark corners. With lots of reassurance and patience, little by little, she has grown in confidence.

She is also very good at understanding commands. My husband has been training her to sit, to wait, and to walk nicely on the lead so that she doesn’t pull, and she has responded really well.

That hasn’t stopped Ela being curious about her new home. She loves chilling in my office with me, or sitting on the bed with my husband while he’s been recovering from his knee replacement — not sure how many mastiffs get to do that! Ela also normally likes to sleep or lie out next to the doors in our kitchen or living room, which seems to be quite an instinctive thing for her to do. If she hears any noises outside (we’re very rural), she is straight up at the window looking to see who it is — and she will bark!

She’s a joy outside too. We ‘share’ our field with wild deer, and she now seems to understand they belong there — she doesn’t bark at them anymore and lets them relax and sleep in peace. And as for the field itself, I don’t think there is a single centimetre she hasn’t sniffed and investigated to work out whether there are any moles or worms under the grass! 😊

We absolutely love her. She is such a joy, and we’re so grateful.

At the same time Ela arrived, we also took on another rescue, Dipi, and the two of them get on brilliantly. We’ve really been blessed with how well they have settled together. There hasn’t been a single growl between them since they both arrived four months ago.

Thank you again to Daniela in Spain and Debra, Tiff and the fantastic EU Rescue volunteers for bringing Ela into our lives 💖”
